Whittington Community First Responder Group

“For our Community, by our Community” |
Whittington Community First Response Group comprises of volunteers who live in the village, and have been trained by the Ambulance Service NHS Trust to respond to any local medical emergency. The area they serve covers the whole of the Parish and extends to Elford, Hopwas and Weeford.
They assess and treat patients until an ambulance or paramedic arrives and are always used in addition to the Ambulance Services, never as an alternative. To access the service members of the public ring 999 as usual.
Responders operate from a dedicated emergency vehicle carrying a wide range of equipment and drugs. Their training consists of theoretical and practical lessons over an eight month period, written and practical assessments, sixty hours ambulance experience and the successful completion of a final all day practical exercise. Update training takes place to ensure the maintenance of a high level of skill.
Volunteers must be between the ages of twenty-one and seventy and be physically active. All are subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check. They are drawn from all backgrounds and a number had significant pre-existing medical and First Aid experience.
While the Ambulance Trust provided all training free of charge, the vehicle, its maintenance, equipment and uniforms are provided by the group which depends entirely on voluntary contributions from the community.
Since qualifying in June 2006 the group has responded to some three hundred incidents including cardiac arrests, strokes, falls, road traffic accidents, diabetic incidents, epilepsy, drug overdoses and breathing problems. Lives have been saved and much pain and suffering alleviated.
